Anu & Raj Emandi

anu3 (2)

Anu is daughter of Rama Rao & Leelavathi.  She is sister of Sachin Pannuri.  Anu is married to Raj Ennmadi and blessed with Anjali.  Both are based in Florida US for more than two decades.  I distinctly remember seeing her in her school uniform wearing powered glass.  Later she seems to have switched to contact lenses.  Over a period of time during my various visits to Hyderabad and final visit was at Banjara hills residence, before marriage she was sporting a jeans and sitting on a rocking chair.

Anu has done Family medicine, works for the Veterans Administration, her husband is a successful granite business and the only indian to represent Florida chamber of commerce delegation to South America. She has a 10 yr old daughter who is very smart and also training in classical indian music and dance

Anjali has a close semblance to her dad Raj I suppose.  Anu is more of Leela Aunts copy.

Anu is a source of support to her dad Rama Rao who has entered into his 80’s I presume.

Anu has specialized in holistic medicine is where u incorporate non traditional practices such as studying in detail about food and its effects, minerals and also other branches such as Ayurveda, homeopathy etc
Deepa”s recollects Anu :

For me anu was like my finishing school teacher in hyd. Correcting my pathetic English grammar , helping me with my maths, introducing me to Enid Blyton books , and can’t forget our night long chat sessions, movies on the VCR , shopping , non stop playing songs on tape recorder.
Vanda do u remember ,u and anu chasing me out of the house when u were watching pretty woman. Bcoz I was too young for some scenes in the movie

Last time when I spoke to Anu over the phone she seems to have recollected my visits to Hyderabad.  We spoke on telephone after a gap of nearly 2 decades, since we were in a mood to recollect good old days and look towards future meet in context of Mahesh’s marriage we spoke at length regarding how I got my sister married and how I expect her to find a bride for Mahesh.  It was fun to dicuss an ideal way to get Mahesh Married.  I look forward to meet Raj regarding whom Mahesh used to dicuss and make it a point to catch up

I am adopting a collage method to unfold the marriage event which has taken place live at Nataraj lawns Chembur on 28/11/2014, where the wedding was solmenised in Kerala style first, which went about in a jiffy and detailed ceremony of the Padmashalis custom.  The wedding ceremonies went till about 1.15 and later photo sessions.

Guys the feel good factor in any wedding is that we get to meet good association of each members of the family and friends circle.  We may not be aware of Gaurav’s close friends and their names but the smile on their face exhibits the warmth and closeness on a happy occasion.  Probably Gaurav must be first off the block into the marriage arena like his dad among his friends circle…..Gaurav please fill in the names …

During my marriage time I was tense somehow, but when I saw Gaurav cool as a cucumber, I was amazed at his tenacity, particularly with dad’s hyper tense voice.  Nothing to demean but to put a point across in a scuttle manner, guys we need to act the age and mentor the next generation.  Hope I am right Gaurav ?  If I am wrong can t help it.  Just Joking !

Gaurav remember the golden advice if you wanna marriage to be successful you got to fall in love again and again, not with a different person but the one whom you married…..Sneha is her name, and now she is a member of Derebails.

Shaila in the absence of Naresh has shouldered lot of responsibility in arrangements, probably we might miss him physically but the fact remains that we could feel his presence in spirit throughout the function.  Brother we dearly miss you physically.  Even today my eyes get filled to think of you as a godfather to younger generation particularly Gaurav. Give a helping hand to your brother Gaurav for he too needs a little push in the right direction.

Hai Hello Neeta we envy your Green Cellphone and appreciate you tenacity and drive to make Gaurav’s wedding a happy and eventful occasion.  By inviting bus loads of neighbor’s to the wedding reception you have contributed to the happy occasion.  Amazing to see such a huge gathering that too on Friday literally a week end.  I guess around 1100 people must have gathered for the happy occasion.  I believe Dinesh has set such a high standard for a gathering probably it will be hard to replicate such crowd assembly in future.   I am sure those who have assembled would have witnessed the magnetic charm of late Shri Rajeev derebail’s connectivity among the Padmashali community members.

DSCN0808 (2)

Great Clan is unity in diversity.  Sanika is basking in glory with almost a bridal type of attire, a dress rehearsal of sorts for her date with destiny.  Naresh I am sure you are watching from heaven above.

I suggested to Sharang to take forward a leap into the blogsphere and utilize his talent for creative expression and become a uniting factor for other members of our clan.  His musings of the Facebook has amazing depth of his mindset and idealism.  The emotion connect that he displayed with Vasanthi was so refreshing that we do not miss a progeny in our family.  This is what is called filling gaps in our lives by reaching out with words and affection.  Truly Sharang I want you to be in blogsphere and hopefully it would be widely read across the globe.

.DSCN0821 (2)

Sneha sorry that I barged into your privacy and introduced myself as Gaurav’s Kaka, because I had told Gaurav I need to get introduced prior to marriage, and I am committed to my statement.  Probably Gaurav because of Dengue attack missed the appointment.  Never mind if our intentions are noble things definitely fall in place.  And see the lord has ensured it

DSCN0831 (2)

The secret for a successful married life take it from me is to listen when other person is angry, respond with a smile, sorry my dear or thank her for small errands.  The faster you learn to use these little phrases and frequently you will enjoy your married life.  I am sure you will find a way out when there is major difference in approach, chill out in the house not outside.  Whatever you wanna do it, do it at home in front of better half…..hey I don t want to sermonize !

DSCN0846 (2) DSCN0851 (2)

Dinesh remember we took time to reach Nataraj Lawns, but the hurry bury was all just an anxiety.  Kye Sera Sera whatever has to happen will happen.  I hope you got the message.  Chill brother……I don t violate rules.

Big brother Kishore was suffering from sore legs but still he kept a smiling face and kept nodding his head in acknowledgement.  The desire to be present at an happy occasion and be connected with the Clan is strong in his dictionary, a typical Karunakaran derebail trait.  I hope his children emulate his simplicity and connectivity ( Shuba & Avinash )

I love Kerala food preparation and after a long long time I really enjoyed a sumptuous vegetarian affair.  And the waiters were literally bouncing on each other because I was conversing with their lingo franca.  Thanks to Nair family for arranging such an excellent affair with a cuisine, and with a lovely company to abet the flavor of the food multiplied manifold.

He is smiling and thinking of blue……….lesser said the better.

Dinner was double fun catching up with the community members, photographic bouts, with Vasanthi around catching up everyone with everybody was really hectic.  But Sneha expressed it beautifully I want to stay put for some more time.  I want stay connected with the family. To make every member feel wanted is a difficult  task to achieve and I am sure we all added our bits and pieces to it. Thanks to Neeta and Dinesh for organizing such a lavish dinner.   I missed out on many items for the fear of choking because of bad throat condition.  Sorry Dee you had to face such a trouble reaching the marriage hall, but I hope you made it up with Chetan around in the evening for the reception.

SORRY Vicky for  calling you Vicky the donor after the hit Bollywood movie.  It came out spontaneously.  Thanks for your appreciation buddy.

Meeting with Jeevan  & Praveen Shetty family, their magnetic short presence was felt. For a few seconds I uttered  to Jeevan what is doing in Catering  business his personality suits cineworld.  Probably in the mould of Gabbar Singh.  I was seriously suggesting to take an audition.  WHO knows s he  will mint money over there too.  Just joking Jevaan.

GAURAV which of these two pics you liked as a fab one ?  Tell me which you liked ?

Sharang I have adopted an unusual route shunning the frills of timing and breaking the barriers of tradition by penning a blog in thanksgiving fashion, probably you could add some more zing to Gaurav’s marriage blog.  Till further updates thanks for all Padmashali community members on being present on the happy occasion, friends & colleagues of Gaurav for blessing with your presence and not presents. Amita was singing praises to Akila as a beauty queen literally in Ash mould.  She is amazed at her personality to the core.  To end it with a bang, Amita summed it up appropriately Rajeev was a Gem with whom we connected in our childhood and shall remain committed till the end.

20141128_210022 (2)

Sanika is ready for the occasion with her tambula.  She was active participant in the happy occasion despite her upcoming exams and preparations.  I hope she recalls her dad’s advice on studies.

Jeevan Shetty is closed to Rajeev Derebail family since they were staying in Chembur, Mahesh and Jeevan happen to be childhood friends.  He is running a successful chain of Malvani food restaurant branded as Ratnagiri.  Amita was a neighbor of the family, just next door staying at Shell Colony.  The Kanchan family looked up the Derebails as an extended family with all their Children being in touch even today.  Amita is current with IT as an officer.  Arun is with ICICI and Vinod abroad working as incharge of a Pet Unit, when I heard last.  Amita was singing glory about Rajeev Derebail.  Her lavish praise for the family was soothing for the ears and literally woke up to the reality, that we should stay connected at all times so that we can tide the moments of crisis and celebrate with joy happy occasions like birthdays and weddings.

Some are afraid of getting themselves photographed for the fear of looking haggard and ugly, Uma is hiding her face but I ensured that Roshan come out in all hues of rainbow colours.  The smile express thousands of words.  In fact everybody tells me that I am a non-stop talker, but it is other way round I bring out the best in people.  I don t know whether it is a god gift of the gab or other person’s need to express.  Guys I was down and out and under medication for hypertension which was taking a heavy toll on my health but I never knew how I spent almost 14 hours continuously being alert and active.  I refused to take a nap guys.  I cannot afford to miss allround hub of activity.

Mahesh don t go missing once again……I shall incorporate your presence a little later with pics and words….Even my photos are missing ?  please guys provide us the missing link….One or two I managed to salvage.  Don t be peeping toms from Flarepath.  Vasanthi discussing with Rishab and Chetan Padmashali in a humouros manner.

On this solemn occasion it is appropriate to remember the grandfather in Rajeev N Derebail & Naresh Derebail, please do bless the couple with maritial bliss and prosperity.  Guide them in the right path.

Now it is time to say good bye to the couple for their honeymoon trip to Udupi, Kerala and Sri Lanka, Bon Voyage Gaurav and Sneha.  Have a rocking time.

Gaurav take care of Sneha forever….with best wishes from De Clan.

Umesh & Vasanthi’s

Prologue : It is a general saying that marriages are finalised in heaven but they have to solemnised and consumated on planet earth. My mom was hunting for a bride for a long time. She had my horoscope in her mind and looking for a Kuja Dosa compatible bride. I must have been taken like a lamb for slaughter to atleast 10 different families some related and some unrelated. You all might be wondering why i did not fall in love or date a girl and get married. I had a few gals in my radar among the relatives and was proceeding cautiously because of mom. She needs a bride of her choice rather than my compatibility. So i let her look around the entire country. I remember i even went Kolkatta and saw a Padmshali girl and partly liked her and later realised she had adorned lot of make up which was downer. Later negotiation broke down and we had to drop her. My uncles daughter got married one by one and therefore the comfort zone of marrying a known girl vanished. My dad was getting frustrated when he used to hear Kuja, he uttered in kannada kuja is nothing but koodioudu mathe jadiyudu. For those who followed it in Kannada i am sure would have had hearty laughter by now.

20141127_102851 (2)

Ultimately she spotted through Sanjeev Shettigar Vasanthi. She was working at that time in stationery division of Corporation Bank. She approved of the match based on horoscope. My dad said come on son let us go and finalise the girl. We called her up and fixed an appointment to meet her in the office at Balmatta. We took a bus and landed in Vasanth Mahal hotel, it happened to be filled with prostitutes which i noticed and ignored. We quickly freshned up and rushed to the bank at 10 am. Vasanthi probably would have expected us in the noon but she managed to hold herself and dad approved of the match instanteously. But i said i want to talk to the alone. She proposed that we visit her place at Karnad for meeting up with the family. We went had a nice Kane lunch with their family but still i was not convinced that she will be able to withstand the tornado type of atmosphere in our family with each one having an independent outlook

20141127_103143 (2)

I requested her family to let me meet and dicuss for a day or two with Vasanthi in privacy. They luckily accepted despite traditinal barriers. Next day we caught up at Punja arcade, her colleague Sudha accompanied her. She saw me and said i dont want to spoil the mood with my presence she vanished. We went to woodside hotel at KSR road and had a nice lunch i had a bottle of beer and dicussed very all facets of my career and family background. I thought i should reveal all essential facts so that she makes an informed decision. After lunch i pushed off to my grandfathers place in Udupi. I had quit Nutrine and had an offer from Kurl-on. It was joining time gap which i was utilising to finalise my alliance. Dad had to rush back to Blore early because mom was pestering him to return. Next day again i suggested we shall go for a movie. We went to watch a movie in Ramakanth theatre near central market. Again day after i suggested we meet to go and watch a movie, oh my goodness i don t know what was happening in her mind. Two movies, one lunch and two visits to her place i was convinced that she would be able to reasonably handle whatever situation.

20141127_103412 (2)

In the meanwhile i reported for duty at Kurl-on. It was a cosy job based in HQ on Dickenson road. We were working 9 to 5 in an AC office on the 5th floor. I used to travel by our old ambassador car. I started feeling restless considering that we were supposed to get engaged and than married on 23rd August 1991. Vasanthi’s dad, mom and brother came and finalised the formalities of marriage. I knew for sure that it wont be prudent to get married and stay in two bedroom house, wherein we were 5 members already. I decided to request my boss to post me outside Bangalore. Initially i was offered Ahmedabad, but later he changed my posting to Nagpur, because the DM over there was married and he wanted to get back to his home town in Calicut. I grabbed the opportunity with both the hands and rushed to Nagpur. What i faced was a total change in set up and operational style in durable industry. It was admistrative accounts and sales, a massive responsibility along with getting used to hindi culture. I hardly had any savings in my account so i took up a cheap accomodation which was occupied by previous incumbent.

20141127_103617 (2)

We were on letter writing spree because those days she did not have telephone at home and i was contactable only over common phone in the business centre. It was troublesome for her to talk in her office. Vasanthi was updating regarding the development and moms absurd demands and behavior. There was a massive misunderstanding developing between the families on some pretext. As the deadline was nearing i was keeping my fingers crossed. But finally the D day was arriving and i applied 15 days leave and proceeded to Blore via Chennai. There was no direct train to Blore from Nagpur. I had simple card printed for the marriage around 200 in nos, i distributed some in Nagpur among dealers colleagues and customer and than proceeded to Blore to distribute among friends and Nutrine circle. Kaladharan accompanied me to few places but he skipped attending the marriage probably for want of leave. In the meanwhile Vasanthi had applied for transfer before fixing the date to Nagpur.

20141127_104212 (2)

She was issued immediate transfer order and her union colleague went and spoke to management how can a girl go and live in Nagpur without getting married. It would be scandulous. So there accomodated to relieve her after marriage.

We hired a tempo and arrived at Udupi previous evening from Bangalore. Jackie a friend of Akila accompanied with Bhaskar and Bharti and Bhavya. I got down and withdrew around 5 K from Vijaya Bank, to pay for the van expenses and other miscellaneous expenses to be incurred for marriage. I was a little tense whether everything will end up smoothly. Early morning after bath we moved from Kalyani Nilaya to marriage hall at Bappanadu. We had a good lot of attendance from our side despite the fact mom never made conscious effort to invite every relative of the family personally. Most of the relatives came because they loved daddy, in fact around 200 people from the clan attended. Vasanthi had a huge crowd from her side.

It was pouring cats and dog and in the noon the weather cleared up a little bit. Many of the corporatin bank staff came to wish us. Somebody published our marriage news in Udayvani, the local newspaper too. I believe goddess durgaparameshwari blessed us with all her might. After an elaborate ceremony the marriage concluded with a lunch at 3 PM. We proceeded to Karnad for a tea session and than pushed off for a night halt at Udupi.

Next day morning again we came back to Karnad to complete the formality and we had a nice non veg lunch and boarded the matador back to Blore in the noon. By 11 pm we reached R T Nagar without much event enroute. Vasanthi had an emotional farewell from her parents. For the first time i really felt sad for her since she was parting association with her family due to marriage.

Bharati and Uma along with Udaya Kumar in the background.  Uday helped me to tie the panche which was tricky issue for me, because it was slipping away from my hips.  He was at the background always during the marriage along with his children Bhavana and Avinash Kallianpur.

Just before leaving Vasanthi’s place at Karnad a group snap.  Jackie special guest appearance.  One final snap so it see

Final countdown and our journey towards Bangalore by matador.

Thank you guys for being patient and browsing through our marriage.  Till we meet again.  Goodbye.

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.

Mani & Saritha’s family.

Seetharam Derebail had achieve the highest post of being Workmen Director at Canara Bank.  In his capacity as a Union President of Canara Bank he had sorted out so many issues related to the workers.  Primary issue might have been transfer related I presume.  He was able to provide job to many community members using his portfolio and influence in allied industry too.  Seetharam was actively involved in all family matters after the death of Naryan Shettigar.  He is blessed with three daughters after his marriage with Sulochana aunty.  Their names are Shailja, Saritha and Sunita.  All names beginning with S.

Suited Mani @ ITC Gardenia
Suited Mani @ ITC Gardenia

Mani is a multifaceted personality on a fast track  career, he was with Godrej when we met in Blore, than he switched to ICICI bank and headed to Dubai.  Last I heard he was with IFFCO.  I believe he is one rare breed of finance guys who switches job otherwise they all put up with one company from start to end.

I distinctly remember Seetharam kaka visiting Kalyani Nilaya and having some wonderful time along with cousin Udaya, Satish and Kishore.  If my memory serves me right we met Seetharam kaka at Bangalore airport in 1995 when Sudesh got married to Ratna.  He did not initially recognize us, but later recognized and asked us to come over.  He was highly stressed at the time of the meeting probably waiting to receive some important dignitary I suppose.  I happened to catch up all the three sisters at Manipal hospital when kaka was admitted into Manipal hospital.  He recognized me by my voice and acknowledged my presence with a tear dropping out of his cheek.  After that slowly he started sinking under the influence of morphine and pain together I presume.  The brave sisters lead by Shailaja performed the last rites.  Naresh and Mahesh too were present.  It was a sad gathering but at least the bonding was back with the family.

Thanks to Sachin’s we were able to visit the abode of Saritha at Hiranandani’s Thane, it was wonderful and warm reception we had visiting her palace.  Her flat was well decked up with artifacts and interior designing.  Mani and Saritha are blessed with a beautiful daughter Sneha.  She wants to follow the footsteps of Gopu kaka in his field.  I am sure her personality is hypnotic enough to cure the patients.  Good Luck Sneha.

Let us pause and salute our bravehearts for preserving the commercial capital’s citadel Mumbai on this eventful day in 2008.

Saritha please fill in the blanks…..with more photos and words………

Chetan & Deepa Padmashali family

Deepa is married to Chetan Padmashali.  She is the daughter of Devendra & Damyanthi Shettigar of Kallianpur house.  She is grand-daughter of Mr Giriappa and Mrs Jalajja of Derebail Clan.  After completing education she started working for IT cos from junior level she got elevated to Team leader of her organization (   ?   )  She started her career in Blore and than after marriage migrated to Mumbai and worked once again in IT companies

Her husband Chetan is a dynamic sales and marketing professional.  He has worked for reputed groups……………………….Currently he is marketing ERP softwares and programs………..based from Mumbai.  He is son of …………………………who has worked for a reputed fragrance manufacturer.  Basically he is born and bought up in Mumbai but on assignment he has travelled extensively in Western Region.

Our association with Deepa’s family has been age old considering her dad Devendra, who happens to be a bank manager was close to my dad K N Derebail.  I remember distinctly that we visited their new house in Vijaynagar, and its area was known as Nagarbhavi, it looked far away from the city limits in 1978, but today it is almost heart of the city.  Deepa’s family were regular visitors to Hoysala apartments ( our place on Cunnigham road ) during holidays, Deepa has fond recollection of her visit, because dad was a real entertainer.  I remember she was a shy girl always smiling away to glory when she saw us, but never used to utter a word !

Deepa may not be aware that her mom Damayanthi suddenly one day landed up at our residence till she could find a suitable accommodation.  She was helped by dad to find a working women’s hostel and she happily moved over.  Damayanthi was earlier staying with Seetaram Kaka or rather we used to call it as Vimal Villa of Gopu kaka.  It was a two storied spacious villa in Hanumathnagar in South Bangalore, we used to be regular guest over there along with Dad.

Saga of a Saint

I happened to visit the mayor of Mumbai’s residence opposit Kanderpada police station in Jan2001. I found that a sage was performing Homa with some mumbo jumbo slokas. It looked impressive and i offered him to visit our home for performing puja, the Mayor was extremely happy to get rid of this saint because he and his two disciples used to pile to every household they visit. He must have swallowed more than 25 k.

The Dongi Baba as Deepa termed parked himself at our place we gave him full independence to use our Bedroom since it was fitted with AC. AC was switched on the entire day and his disciples used to contact all potential preys for the next place of visit. They made international and STD calls by using lightening call facility. Plus they used to send telegram by phone asking people to contact them on our number, if they don t respond these guys used to book urgent call to converse. At the end of 15 days stay our telephone bill was Rs 3500, Electricity bill was 2000 and plus cost of hosting and transporting them was another 5000. It was a real ripper.

Buggers did not even have the basic sense to switch off the AC when the vehicle is switched off, i returned after the parking car, it wouldn’t start and being a new vehicle it did start once we pushed. I gave a piece of mind to the disciple concerned. That is when they must have performed black magic.

Deepa’s dad was being honoured as Chief guest in Padmashali Sangha meet at Mumbai. He visited the function and there i happened to meet Deepa, who wanted to come check out Mumbai in my Car along with these Dongi Babas. These guys wanted to impress Deepa i suppose, let us go to Govinda’s place which happened next to Iskon temple. We visited Iskon temple first. Than we went to Govinda’s apartment, the babas went to his private room and started chanting mumbo jumbo he must have been spell bound, that Baba has come specially to bless him. Govinda was under heavy stress because of his rumours of being close to Rani. Deepa and self waited in the main hall for 15 minutes, meanwhile there was a call from her dad to immediately return, we rushed towards hotel Ramakrishna. She was back at her nest safely escorted by 7.45pm, despite that her dad was upset.

Well Govida’s career went on a tail spin after the visit of this Baba and so did my career was temporarily affected, probably he was an expert blackmagician or a tantric. One of his disciple looked to me like Swami Nityanand another fraud. Best part of these events is that when he visited our place at Attavar he was feeling negative vibrations i believe. I feel the saint met his match in my mom and brother. He knew he will be chased out of the residence instead of accepting his request. Plus they knew they cant make any free calls or enjoy AC facility in Attavar.

Moral of the story is that never trust any saint or astrologer to arrange for quick fixes, they will ensure that there is a big hole in your pocket.

Prakash & Vinutha Shettigar Family

Vinutha Shettigar is the daughter of Dharmapal Derebail.  She is married to Dr. Venkatraya Shettigar’s brother in law Prakash Shettigar, who happens in turn to be brother in law of my brother Dr. Sudesh Derebail.  Life is a full circle when it comes to

a family tree, here is a classic example of the same.

Vinutha I am running out of steam please fill in the gaps to make a great description of your family…..

Shyla Naresh Derebail family

What a coincidence both Naresh and Sanika were born in the same month but under different zodiac constellations.  One individual whom I miss dearly after my fathers demise is Naresh derebail.  He has been the linking factor to the entire clan based in Mumbai.  Basically being from the petroleum sector both dad and Naresh had the same inclination and their style of approach too resembled a lot.  Naresh happens to be fourth son of Rajeev family.  He is married to Shyla who is an executive in a premier public sector unit.  They are blessed with two siblings in Sanika and Daksha.

Since today happens to be Sanika’s birthday ( 23/11/19XX ) I thought it appropriate to dedicate this page and day to Naresh derebail.  Wishing all the health and happiness to Sanika on her birthday.

Happy birthday Sanika
Happy birthday Sanika Derebail

Naresh during his childhood was a little aloof and shy character probably he had elders to respect in the form of Siblings Anita, Dinesh & Satish.  I remember spending a Diwali day in their house along with Dad and Akila.  There was lavish celebrations ( 1984 ) Akila had dropped down for Air Hostess interview with Ratan Tata, Jaitley and Jay Bahuduri.  She passed all the tests but failed in vision test.  It was just an excuse I believe to select only candidates with top influence my father failed to use his influence.

Naresh was a support system for Rajeev Clan, particularly when Dinesh opted to work outside Mumbai.  He handled all the matters related to house with lot of planning and care.  When he joined BPCL, he worked hard in the initial years as apprentice.  I believe he was on the program for almost 5 years.  Once he was absorbed full time he got into trade union activities just like his mentor K N Derebail.  He came out of the shell literally, ironically BPCL was Burmashell when K N DEREBAIL was working.

A collage Naresh photos in 1994
A collage Naresh photos in 1994

After the untimely demise of Anita the burden of managing totally fell on the broad shoulders of Naresh.  The entire family was shattered and shocked beyond belief.  Slowly they emerged from the tragedy.  She was helping dad to manage the business which was flourishing.  After her death the business started dwindling anyways it was under partnership.  I remember Rajeev Kaka has business spread all across India.

When I was posted in Nutrine as management trainee for 3 months ( 1983 ), initial 15 days I stayed with Naresh & family.  It was a grind working the toughest markets of to sell confectionery in Bandra to Borivili belt.  I withstood the pressure and emerged triumphantly, that is when I was asked to stay with my colleagues in Khar guest house.  During those days the warmth Rajeev Kaka and family displayed was literally a payback of sorts or rather the intrinsic bonding that my dad had with the clan came out prominently.

In April 1994 when I was posted to Mumbai, a turning point in my career at Kurl-on.  Naresh literally sheltered me and that is when Rajeev Kaka decided to shift to Udupi to build their nest in Kalyani Compound after partition.  It was a painful but right decision to move away from hectic life of Mumbai.  From than onwards, it bought out the best in Naresh to manage family affairs.  He used to share his professional and personal life over a drink session.  He used to be hyper tensed and I was glad that I was able to provide support morally for him to sail through the most difficult phase of his life.  When Vasanthi was transferred we shifted to Kurla nearby to shell colony so that we could still be in touch.  On the job front I pulled out all my efforts to establish myself in Mumbai and than within one year I switched over to HPL, that is when I shifted gear to top gear.

We had mutual admiration and bonding that sometimes other members of the family must have wondered whats happening ? Some of his statements were outlandish but it was passe over a drink.  All his thoughts and tensions he used to come out openly when he downed one or two swigs, he told me little secret about my brother too which I got a hint of earlier.

Our second last meeting at Bangalore in 2010 was filled with lot of events, visiting Manipal Hospital, Travelling to Srirangapatna by car and from there halting at Ganesh’s residence in Virajpet, and than proceeding to Padubidri for a night halt.  He was upset with me for delaying our trip due to halts.  I could not afford to drive continuously due to my diabetic condition, so the halts were essential since it was dark and meeting my Nutrine colleague one last time too must have been destined because he too passed away suddenly.  The refusal by bank union secretary to allot guest house was a scene to be witnessed.  Naresh was about to blow out but controlled himself.

Well after he met his mom at Udupi Naresh was extremely happy and satisfied.  The next day we rushed and stayed in railway ac dormitory since he had to board early morning train to Kurla at 4.30 am.  I escorted him and had a TAJ breakfast and returned to Blore driving all the way by dropping Sisters, College student and Accident passenger and reached Blore at 10 pm. OMG.

The final meeting was in August for an evening session when he came to Udupi to meet mother.  Something seems to be simmering in his  mind which he did not spell out but I believe that tension never left him.  I wonder whether his withdrawl from active union activities too contributed to his untimely demise.  The charming light of derebail Clan went out.  When Mahesh gave the news of his death I immediately booked my ticket to Mumbai by VRL, but I never got to see his body being cremated due to providential delay. I left after 4 days of mourning at Chembur.  For me he is still living in spirit like my dad guiding me as it were day in day out.

Naresh was very much concerned about Mahesh, he used to coax me to convince Mahesh to settle down in Udupi for sake of mother.  He told Sanika once that don t pressurize yourself too much for studies, if you get good marks you can become a doctor or connected with medical field.  Daksha was his pet child and he loved his family as a whole.  He might have had some difference of opinion with Sudesh, which is understandable.  He helped Dinesh financially by arranging for funds I believe which I believe was repaid with interest.  Overall he was a uniting factor for Derebail Clan with his telephone number remaining constant over decades.  Anybody would remember the number by heart I suppose.

Vandana’s Wonderful World

80035-Great+success+fish+quote vand4 They ( RamMoorthy & Ramani ) got married on Nov 1 , 1971, it was Andhra Pradesh formation day and Pappa’s destruction day as he would say. Yeah, Naresh stayed with Dodamma but would visit us on weekend, would refer to mummy as ‘ Bournvita maami’ as she would always ask him’bournvita peeta kya’. Mummy and Pappa were incredibly amazing hosts. I remember one visit of Baby mama and Akila, and some German nationals. It poured heavily and the kitchen was flooded, we used rice gunny bags as water adsorbents. The next day they went fishing in tank bund, do not remember if they caught anything. What a fishing expedition ?  The fishing rod was later gifted by the Germans to Baby mama I suppose. vand1 IMG-20141118-WA0000 Mirror Mirror On the wall I’m telling you my secrets Once and for all I really want you to see The other side of me Not my appearance Somewhere behind the looks I want you to know That you know how I feel You show me my expression Everything is true You never lie Like most people do Mirror Mirror On the wall I have no secrets Because you know them all Ack : Helena Alvarez vand16 th3LX20SBZ When Ramani aunty got married in Hyderabad the entire clan rushed was present in the city to witness the ceremony. Our distinct memory of the marriage was gulping coke after coke and getting a kick out of it. Coke was banned in 1977 and so i presume the marriage happened in 1971, correct me Vandana on the dateline. vandana4 Every time when we used to visit Hyderabad we used to park ourselves in Ramani aunts place. In fact once RamMoorthy uncle asked us how come all derebails turn up at our place only for staying. I too replied we are guest for one or two days and it so happens that your place (Himmayat Nagar ) is in the heart of city closer to Kachiguda railway station and we get more love and affection along with good homely food. I remember Naresh too parked himself for a year or two to complete his studies in Hyderabad. Or rather shuttling between Leela aunts place and Ramani aunts place. No wonder Vandi was in touch with Naresh rather than me. I was wondering why now as i pen this blog i can appreciate her proximity. vandana1 RamMoorthy uncle had good business contacts among grain merchants and was a zamindar in his own right with farmlands under the family possession, so the idea of running a co-operative shack for the Clan in Hyderabad must have been born. Every time i found Leela aunty, Babakka or somebody else bumping in their place to pick up 5 kgs of rice 2 ksgs of daal etc. They had a weighing machine for exact measurements too. Probably they must be maintaining an account too of the monthly purchases. Thus Ramani aunts residence was a hub of activity, with Ramani aunty being the queen bee. vandana3 After i got married to Vasanthi I had to introduce her to our family, since they could not make it to the marriage. Our first honeymoon trip was to Hyderabad. We automatically rushed towards Ramani aunty’s place. Vasanthi got bitten by ants and Ramani aunt applied some turmeric paste. We enjoyed our 3 days stayed during which time all the relatives flocked to see who is the new bride to Ramani aunty’s place. Vasanthi was keeping company for Ramani aunty in the kitchen and i was giving company to RamMoorthy uncle, who was in his elements joking and advicing me in general. Vandana was studying her medicine and she was literally rushing to college we hardly got a chance to speak as it were. Once i joined duty i was mostly staying in hotels and used to pop in Aunty’s place for an hour or so that might explain why we never interacted much…. 10735662_906867892658324_2019570294_n RamMoorthy uncle with his Yashica camera and Ambassador car was moving around and shooting some marriage functions. His skills of photography is legendary. I believe he must have had huge collections of black and white photographs. I had seen one of his snaps of Anita’s marriage photo in Vimal villa. He owned a bike too in which probably i took a royal ride along with Gundu ( Venkat ) to an ice cream parlour located nearby. If you ask me the year probably in 1985. Oh my goodness the name of the ice parlour was Yankee Doodle from Kwality”s IMG-20141208-WA0000 Sachin has such an important anchor role to play in Derebail, he is the common factor in US Clan.  Invariably they make it a point to visit all our cousins abroad as well as in India.  I remember my dad used to do it as a matter of routine a surprise visit to all friends and relatives so that they are not stressed out in making elaborate arrangements for dinner or lunch.
